News Image Save the Date for D.C. alumni networking 5/06/15

The staffs of the AU Career Development and Judson Leadership centers invite all Washington, D.C.-area alumni to a “meet and greet” networking event Friday, June 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the One Washington Circle Hotel, 1 Washington Circle N.W.


News Image Galvan ’10’s art ‘Taking Flight’ at Staten Island Museum annual spring gala 5/06/15

It was only a matter of time until Gustavo Galvan’s art really took flight. And it will do just that this weekend at the Staten Island Museum’s annual spring gala.

On Saturday, the centerpieces for the event, this year themed “Taking Flight,” will be in the shape of 43 birds divided into eight types: Tree Swallow, Eastern Bluebird, Hooded Warbler, Cedar Waxwing, Red Cardinal, Pileated Woodpecker, Purple Martin, and the Rufous Hummingbird. All of the intricate paper birds adorned with colorful paper feathers were created by artist and designer Gustavo Galvan, AU Class of 2010. These colorful creatures will be hanging on curly willow branches at tables in a menagerie-style installation for the evening’s festivities in the Above Ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1100 South Ave., Bloomfield.


News Image Korman ’59 solo show ‘informed by nature’ 5/06/15

Barbara Korman, AU Class of 1959, will open a solo exhibition at the Garrison Art Center Friday, May 8 with a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Balter Gallery. Barbara will also be available Saturday, May 9, from 3:30-5 p.m. the show runs through Sunday, May 17.

In describing her work, Barbara says: “Storm felled trees. Sprawling vines. Bent branches. This is where it begins for me. An awareness, usually informed by nature, juiced by some inner sympathies and often defying explanation.


Claire ’15 films video to be shown on downstate cable 4/30/15

Patrick Claire ’15, who will graduate in June from the AU Downstate campus with a master’s degree in education-school counseling,  has completed a video promoting the Walton YABC (Young Adult Borough Center) program, where he currently works, which will be shown in the downstate area this spring on CableVision and Verizon Fios on BronxNet.

The 2015 Ride to Reunion is a hub and spoke tour! 

The “Hubs and Spokes with Alfred Blokes” tour will kick off  Saturday, June 6 in Auburn, NY.  This year the group will enjoy two-day stays and regional exploring in Auburn, Canandaigua, and Letchworth State Park as it makes its way to Alfred for Reunion Weekend 2015, June 12-15.


News Image Blanchard ’86 featured in USA Today article 4/30/15

Cheryl Blanchard, CEO of Microchips Biotech, AU Class of 1986, and member of the AU Board of Trustees, was one of three CEOs featured in an USA Today article by Jeanne Blake posted April 20, 2015.

In “How 3 CEOs overcame tough business challenges,” Blake asked the three chief executive officers to discuss their leadership and communications style. She found “Bold leaders listen carefully, are resourceful and communicate constantly.

News Image Baugh ’53 decanter selected for Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum collection 4/23/15

A Blenko Glass Co. decanter and stopper, whose concept, design, and execution are attributed to Betty Baugh, AU Class of 1953, was selected for a Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection this past winter. The Cooper-Hewitt, which was renovated and reopened in December 2014, is the only museum in the nation devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design.


News Image Perry ’12’s work has place in upcoming Brooklyn art space screening/lecture 4/23/15

A piece by Sondra Perry, AU Class of 2012, will be part of a screening/lecture Tuesday, April 28 at Light Industry, a venue for film and electronic art in Brooklyn.

Sondra’s one-minute clip “My Twilight Zone” will be included along with the work of seven other artists in “Quality Television” a screening and lecture by Martine Syms, an artist/conceptual entrepreneur based in Los Angeles.


Four alumni to serve on ceramic/glass industry board 4/23/15

The Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) will install its first Board of Trustees during the inaugural Ceramics Expo Trade Show, April 28-30 in Cleveland.

An initiative of The American Ceramic Society, the CGIF’s mission is to ensure that the global ceramic and glass industry is able to attract, inspire, and train the highest quality talent available to work with this unique class of engineered materials.
