Carla Conrad Johnson worked for two years at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts before beginning her academic career at Alfred University’s Herrick Library in the mid-1970’s. She was hired to manage the art slide collection in Scholes Library in 1979, moving to a faculty position as Art and Visual Resources Librarian in 1985. She was appointed Director of Scholes Library in 1993, promoted to the rank of Librarian in 1995, and appointed Dean of Libraries in 2005.
In 1990 Ms. Johnson was elected President of the Visual Resources Association, an international organization of visual information professionals; she has also served on several major committees of the Art Libraries Society of North America. She has chaired the Design Division of the American Ceramic Society, and served as a National Science Foundation research center evaluator for over ten years. In 1993 Ms. Johnson received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship. She was elected Vice-Chair of the SUNY Council of Library Directors in 2005, serving as Chair in 2006-07.
She is the author of many journal articles on art and media librarianship and has given presentations at national professional conferences. Her reference book on visual resource collections received the Worldwide Books Publication Award from the Art Libraries Society in 1997.
