Hartwick edges Lady Saxons on last-second shot

ALFRED, NY – Hartwick’s Lauren Ploof hit a short baseline jumper as time expired to give the visiting Hawks a 46-44 win over the Alfred University women’s basketball team Sunday afternoon.

Alfred (9-10, 3-7 Empire 8) had battled back from an 11-point deficit in the final five minutes to knot the game at 44-44 on a jumper by AU senior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) with 23 seconds left. Ploof drove to the right baseline and lofted the winning eight-foot jumper with under a second remaining.

Senior forward Alysha Dias (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) led AU with eight points and 11 rebounds and junior point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) added 10 points, seven board and three steals. Senior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) added seven points, five boards, and three steals.

AU battled poor shooting throughout much of the game, connecting on 22 percent from the floor, but held a 44-32 rebounding advantage and made 19 of 25 free throws (76 percent). Harwick (6-13, 4-7 Empire 8) shot 39 percent from the floor and made five three-pointers to one for AU.

Heather Pruchansky led Hartwick with 13 points, while Ploof and Jalicia Conell each finished with six.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. at home against Ithaca.
