AU track and field teams compete at Empire 8 indoor championships

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed Sunday at the Empire 8 Conference championships, hosted by RIT. The AU men placed third of six teams competing and the Alfred women were fifth of six teams.

The AU men took the top three spots in the shot put, with junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) winning the event (13.51 meters). Freshman Mike Raplee (Dundee, NY/Dundee) was second (12.87 meters) and senior Travis Cox (Ashaway, RI/Westerly) was third (12.80). Cox also took third in the weight throw (13.27 meters) and Raplee was eighth (11.55).

Sophomore Annie Mills (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) led the AU women with a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (9.25 seconds) and an eighth place in the 55-meter dash (8.04 seconds). The team of senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga) and senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) took second in the women’s distance medley (13:34.98).

Top performers for the Alfred men included: sophomore Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden), fifth in the 400 meters (50.82) and seventh in the 200 meters (23.44); senior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), fifth in the 400 meters (52.08); junior Markenson Joseph (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional), second in the weight throw (13.73 meters); freshman Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), eighth in the 55-meter dash (6.81) and ninth in the long jump (6.18 meters); and sophomore Justin Shardlow (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond), 10th in the long jump (6.17 meters). Consolo, senior Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic), and Scott took third in the 4-x-400 relay (3:30.14).

Freshman Kelly-Jo Beck (York, NY/York) took fifth in the shot put (10.20 meters) for the AU women. Freshman Kirstin Cook (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) was eighth (9.53 meters). Other top performers for the AU women were: Crimmins, ninth in the mile (5:41.33); Morrissey, ninth in the 400 meters (1:07.00); freshman Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly), third in the weight throw (11.89 meters); and junior Emily Merkey (Walworth, NY/Wayne), eighth in the weight throw (10.31 meters).

The AU men’s and women’s teams compete next on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Syracuse.
