Saxons drop 81-63 decision to Ithaca

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team lost 81-63 to visiting Ithaca College Friday evening at the McLane Center.

Ithaca (14-6, 7-4 Empire 8) made 13 three-pointers, shot a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line and outrebounded Alfred 54-40. The Bombers led 42-30 at the half and Alfred could get no closer than 13 after intermission (69-56 with 5:29 left).

Junior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored 17 points to lead the Saxons (9-11, 2-9 Empire 8), who shot 34 percent from the floor (16 percent from three-point range) and made 60 percent of their free throws (15 of 25). Junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had 13 points and two assists and freshman centers Phil Mormon (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Bryan Bobo (Ontario, NY/Wayne) netted 10 and nine points, respectively. Senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Phil Barera had game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (18) to pace Ithaca. Chris Cruz-Rivas scored 17, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out three assists and Andrei Oztemel scored 19 points (15 on five three-pointers) to go with six boards.

Alfred plays next on Tuesday, Feb.9, at 8 p.m. at St. John Fisher.
