Track and field teams competing at ECAC championships
NORTHAMPTON, MA -- The first day of the ECAC indoor track and field championships was held Friday at Smith College in Northampton, MA. The Alfred University men's and women's teams, competing in two events, did not score on Friday.
The men's team was to resume competition today while the AU women are finished at the two-day championship meet.
For the AU women, senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), freshman Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga) and senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) took 16th in the distance medley relay (13:27.42), the only event in which the Saxon women were entered. Gaylord (1,200 meters), Morrissey (400 meters), Haahr (800 meters) and Crimmins (1,600 meters) set a new school record in the event (12:56.03) with their fourth-place finish at last weekend's state championships.
Junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) was the only member of the AU men's team competing Friday, finishing 15th in the shot put (13.54 meters). Ross won a state indoor title in the shot put last weekend.
The championships conclude today. The AU men’s team of seniors Lee Consolo(Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) and Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and sophomore Rich Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) will compete in the 4X400-meter relay. The team set a new school record (3:25.22) in a third-place finish at the state championship meet.
Scott will also compete in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash at the ECAC meet. He set a new school record in the 400 meters (50.39 seconds) at the state championships. Consolo and Phillips will each compete in the 500-meter run today.
