AU men’s lacrosse team rallies to beat Misericordia in overtime

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team stormed back from a seven-goal fourth quarter deficit to force overtime and beat Misericordia, 12-11, Wednesday afternoon in Myrtle Beach.

AU trailed 10-3 after three quarters but outscored Misericordia 8-1 in the fourth to take the game to sudden death overtime, where senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) netted the gamewinner. With the win, AU improves to 1-1 on the season, while Misericordia falls to 0-2.

Russo finished with four goals and two assists to lead the Saxons, who bounced back from a season-opening overtime loss to Brockport on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) had two goals and three assists and freshman midfielders Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) each scored two goals.

Sophomore midfielders Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) and Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) each scored a goal, with Schutz adding a team-best nine groundballs. Junior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had two assists and sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) had one.

Freshman Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) played 57 minutes in goal and allowed 10 goals while making 13 saves. Freshman Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played three minutes in net and allowed one goal.

Alfred plays Friday at 1 p.m. in Myrtle Beach against Vassar before returning home to prepare for a March 17 game at Morrisville.
