Medaille hands AU men’s lacrosse team triple-overtime defeat

ALFRED, NY – Medaille scored 1:04 into the third overtime period to claim a 9-8 victory over the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

Medaille (2-1) made up a two-goal deficit late in the fourth quarter to force overtime, with the tying goal coming with 50 seconds left in regulation. Both teams had man-up opportunities in the extra periods but couldn’t convert. On the game-winning goal, AU freshman goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) stopped a shot but was unable to control the rebound. Medaille’s Joe Kozovski picked up the groundball and beat Doyle to the top-right side.

The teams were evenly matched throughout the contest, with Medaille outshooting Alfred 44-34 and AU holding a 46-34 advantage in groundballs. Alfred won 14 of 21 face-offs and converted four of eight power plays to only one of six for the Mavericks. AU was hurt by turnovers; the Saxons had 41 for the game, including seven in the overtime periods.

Freshman midfielder Scott Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) had two goals for Alfred (2-3). Senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), freshman midfielder Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) and sophomore midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) each had a goal and an assist, while sophomore midfielder James Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) and sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) each scored one goal. Sophomore attackman James Cahill (Sugar Land, TX/Clements) added two assists.

Tyler Strassburg had three goals to lead Medaille. Kozovski had two goals and two assists and Jim Luthart added a goal and two assists.

Doyle made 20 saves in net for Alfred. Medaille goalie Jordan Ellis stopped 15 shots.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 24, at 4 p.m. at home against Cazenovia.
