WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 12, 2012 – The Ithaca, NY region tops the 2012 list of metropolitan areas in the U.S. with the highest per capita number of Peace Corps volunteers.  leven (11) currently serving Peace Corps volunteers call Tompkins County home, making it the number three Peace Corps volunteer-producing metropolitan area in the nation on a per capita basis.  One of them is Catherine "Kate" Stalter, AU Class of 2005, currently a volunteer in Ghana teaching creative arts at a school for the deaf.

In the Ithaca area, 10.8 of every 100,000 residents are currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers.

“I think living in Ithaca, in such a diverse community, prepared me to be open to many new experiences. I've been open to the new foods, new people,” said the 29 year old, who graduated from Ithaca High School and AU.

“The Northeast has a culture of involvement and community engagement, so we are always well represented in Peace Corps service worldwide,” said Northeast Regional Office Manager Brian Melman. “This year, more than 1,500 residents of the Northeast region are serving overseas, gaining leadership skills and tangible benefits while making a difference for those in need.  Residents interested in working with communities in 76 nations to address changing and complex needs in education, health and HIV/AIDS, business, information technology, agriculture, and the environment should contact the Northeast Regional Office for additional information.”

New York State, meanwhile, is ranked as the number two producing state in the nation, with 448 state residents currently serving as volunteers.  Historically, New York State has produced 12,863 Peace Corps volunteers who have helped promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of the 139 countries in which they have served.

Peace Corps’ eight regional recruiting offices across the United States work to recruit and provide information to prospective Peace Corps volunteers. The Northeast regional recruiting office serves Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont, and Peace Corps recruiters work locally throughout the region.
