Women’s Basketball just short against Naz, 59-56

ALFRED, NY-  The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost another close Empire 8 decision in a 59-56 decision, on the road to Nazareth, Friday Evening.

Sophomore guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) helped jump start the Lady Saxons with 10 quick points, to give AU the lead headed into half, 29-24.

Alfred sustained the lead up until the 12 minute mark, when Nazareth tied the game at 35-35.  The lead would then be exchanged back-and-forth, and neither side would lead more than six points.  A missed 3-point opportunity as time expired would secure the game for the Golden Flyers.

For the game, Alfred shot 34 percent from the field, 29 percent from beyond the arc, and 63 percent from the free throw line.

Cleary finished with a team-high 19 points, as well as seven rebounds.  Junior forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) also scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore forward Brennan Ferguson (Destrehan, LA/Ursaline Academy) matched Cleary with a team-high seven rebounds, respectively.

AU (5-13, 0-9 Empire 8) returns to action Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. against Utica College.
