Saxons edge Golden Flyers, 80-76
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team bounced back from Fisher to down Nazareth College in an Empire 8 matchup, 80-76, on the road, Friday evening.
Despite the eight points senior guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) would lead the Saxons with, they headed into halftime behind, 39-35.
Heading into the second half, Nazareth exchanged the lead with AU up until the 3:15 minute mark when the score was tied at 64-64. The Saxons would outscore the Golden Flyers 12-16 to give them advantage as time ran out.
This win improves AU to a 5-13 overall record and 2-7 in Empire 8 play. For the game, AU shot and impressive 67 percent (over Nazareth’s 39 percent) from beyond the arc which proved to give them the edge down the stretch. Alfred also shot 55 percent from the field and 53 percent from the free-throw line.
Curran finished with a team-best 19 points and team-high five rebounds, pacing the Saxons. Senior guard Tim Costello (Windsor, NY/Windsor) followed with 16 points and Junior guard Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris) scored 12 points.
AU returns to McLane Center to play Utica, Saturday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. for their second meeting of the season.
