Utica knocks off AU women’s basketball team, 86-43

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost to visiting Utica College, 86-43, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference matchup in the McLane Center.


Alfred (5-13, 0-10 Empire 8) trailed at halftime, 40-20, as Utica shot 41 percent from the floor, connecting on 17 field goals to six for the Saxons, who shot 20 percent. Utica (10-10, 6-4 E8)  continued its hot shooting after intermission, making 67 percent of its shots to finish 51 percent overall.


Freshman forward Hailey Sick (Dansville, NY/Dansville) posted a double-double (12 Points, 12 rebounds) to pace Alfred. Junior guard Rachael Stedman (Hamburg, NY/Springville Griffith) added a game-high 13 points for the Saxons and freshman guard Heather Hebert (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored eight.


The visiting Pioneers held a 54-33 rebounding advantage. Bridget Greenwald pulled down a game-high 13 boards to go with 11 points. Samantha Stayer netted a game-high 20 points with six rebounds and Meghan Fiore scored 15.


Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m. at home against Houghton.
