Women’s Basketball clinches win over Houghton, 61-59
ALFRED, NY- The Alfred University women’s basketball team topped a visiting Houghton College, Friday evening, 61-59.
The contest stayed close throughout its entirety as AU outscored Houghton 28-24 the first half, and Houghton outscored Alfred in the second half, 35-33. The game was decided with a game winning buzzer-beater by sophomore guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) as time expired.
For the game, the Lady Saxons held an advantage over Houghton, outshooting them from the field 33 to 31 percent, from beyond the arc 36 to 29 percent, and 67 to 64 percent from the free throw line.
Cleary finished with a game-high 19 points, leading the Lady Saxons. Junior guard Rachael Stedman (Hamburg, NY/Springville Griffith) helped out with 12 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman forward Hailey Sick (Dansville, NY/Dansville) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, respectively.
AU (6-14, 1-10 Empire 8) takes on Elmira in E8 play Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m.
