Nazareth edges AU women’s basketball team, 52-50
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women’s basketball dropped a close 52-50 decision to visiting Nazareth College Friday evening at the McLane Center.
Nazareth (8-14, 5-8 Empire 8) led by 10 points with just under four minutes remaining in regulation before Alfred (6-16, 1-12) went on a 10-2 run to pull to within two points with 35 seconds left. After forcing a shot clock violation, AU had a chance, with 4.2 seconds left, to tie the game or take the lead, but was unable to get off a shot as time expired.
Naz led 17-16 at the half, as both team shot 20 percent from the floor. For the game, Alfred shot 32 percent from the field to 28 percent for the visitors. Nazareth enjoyed an advantage from the foul line, making 14 of 20 free throws to Alfred six in 12 attempts.
Freshman guard Heather Hebert (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Saxon s. Sophomore guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Mercy) added 11 points; junior guard Rachael Stedman (Hamburg, NY/Springville Griffith) had eight; and junior forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Lindsey Kelly had 23 points and 16 rebounds to pace Nazareth.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. at Houghton.
