AU indoor track and field teams compete at RIT Invitational
ROCHESTER, NY –- Alfred University sophomore Nolan Rummel (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) broke a nearly three-decade-old record in winning the men's 500-meter run at thwe RIT Invitational indoor track and field meet Saturday. No team scores were kept, but Rummel and several other Saxon men and women turned in solid performances.
Rummel won the 500 meters with a time of of 1:06.73, which broke the previous AU school record of 1:06.80 set in 1984 by Dennis Shultz. Rummel's time also met met ECAC qualifying standards.
Sophomore Miasia Hilliman (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and junior Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) paced the Saxon women. Hilliman was second in the 60-meter dash (8.25 seconds); Graudons was second in the pole vault (3.10 meters) and ninth in the high jump (1.48 meters).
Other AU men who turned in top-10 finishes were: junior Eddie Potter (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and senior Randy Brito (New York, NY/Cardinal Hayes), third (1:08.19) and 10th (1:09.73), respectively, in the 500 meters; and junior Isaiah Cassin (Candor, NY/Candor), second in the high jump (1.88 meters).
The team of freshman Tchabelino Azimyt (New York, NY/A. Philip Randolf), seniors Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) and Brito took fourth in the 4X200-meter relay (1:34.76); and Brito, Potter, Rummel and Weaver were third in the 4X400 relay (3:28.36).
Other top performers for the Alfred women were: junior Liz DeMonte (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman), second in the high jump (1.53 meters); and senior Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), seventh in the 500 meters (1:26.71).
The team of sophomore Patricia Banahene (Brighton, NY/Brighton), senior Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Columbia), Hilliman and sophomore Corine Pettit (Strykersville, NY/Holland) was fourth in the 4X200 relay (1:52.15); sophomore Tracie Forrester (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth), Banahene, Larkins and junior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) were fifth in the 4X400 relay (4:32.26); and senior Jennifer Miranda (Bronx, NY/Academy of Letters), freshman Morgan Flick (Honeoye, NY/Honeoye), sophomore Alyssa Goot (Cassadaga, NY/Fredonia) and Morrissey took seventh in the 4X800 relay (11:52.89).
The AU men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 22 and 23) at the New York State championships at Ithaca College.
