AU ski teams compete at Labrador, qualify for Mideast Regionals
TRUXTON, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17, at Labrador Mountain.
The AU women took third in the combined standings and the Saxon men were fourth; both qualified to compete in the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA) Mideast Regionals next weekend (Feb. 23 and 24) at Bristol Mountain.
In Saturday’s giant slalom at Labrador, the AU men’s and women’s teams each finished fourth out of seven teams competing. Senior Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) placed eighth to pace the AU men, while freshman Holly Mager (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) led the Alfred women with a seventh-place finish.
Also for the AU men in the GS: sophomore Jeremy Osak (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was 12th; freshman Cody Towner (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 19th; senior Bob Cilino (Bath, NY/Haverling) was 21st; and freshman Bryce Lloyd (Hartland, VT/Sharon Academy) was 24th. For the Alfred women, junior Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) was eighth; senior Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was 12th; junior Dianne Mattar (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) was 13th; and freshman Kaitlyn Tepper (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 15th.
In Sunday’s slalom, the AU women took third. Mager was fifth; Spitz was sixth; sophomore Alexandra Feeney (Vail, CO/Battle Mountain) was 10th; Tepper was 12th; and Dvorak was 15th. The Saxon men finished fourth as a team in the slalom. Barton was ninth; Cilino was 13th; Towner was 15th; and Lloyd was 19th.
Twelve of 16 teams from the Mideast Conference advance to regionals next weekend at Bristol. Alfred’s women qualified eighth of 12; the Saxon men were ninth of 12. The top two men’s and women’s teams at regionals will move on to compete at the USCSA National Championships March 5-9 in Sun Valley, ID.
