AU swimming and diving teams set for UNYSCSA/Empire 8 championships
ITHACA, NY — Alfred University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, after a month-long layoff, will take to the pool again at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA)/Empire 8 Conference championships this week at Ithaca College.
The four-day meet begins Wednesday, Feb. 20, and concludes Saturday, Feb. 23. Preliminary heats begin at 10 a.m. each day, with championship and consolation finals beginning at 6 p.m. each evening.
Fourteen women’s and 13 men’s teams will be competing for the UNYSCSA championship. The Empire 8 Conference men’s and women’s champions are determined by using results from the six Empire 8 schools – Alfred, Hartwick, Ithaca, Nazareth, Stevens and Utica – competing at the meet. Live results and psyche sheets for the men’s and women’s championships are available on-line.
The Alfred men were seventh of 14 teams at the UNYSCSA meet and fourth of seven teams in the Empire 8 championships last season. The Saxons’ top returnee from last season’s championships is sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint). He was second in the 400-yard individual medley in 2012 and is seeded sixth in that event this week. Senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), who took 15th in the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle at last year’s UNYSCSA meet, is seeded 16th, 20th and 15th, respectively, in those events this week.
Alfred’s women were 12th of 14 teams at the UNYSCSA championships and fifth of six at the Empire 8 meet last season. The Saxons’ top women’s returnee is sophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Region), who was 10th in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle last season. Behr is seeded 15th in the 50- and 100-yard free and 16th in the 100-yard backstroke this week. Freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) is seeded in the top-10 in three events: the 100 butterfly (fourth), the 200 butterfly (fifth), and the 200 freestyle (ninth).
