2/21/13

ITHACA, NY – Four Alfred University swimming records fell Thursday during the preliminary heats of the second day of action at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships.

For the second day in a row, the AU women set a new relay record. A day after establishing a new mark in the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday, the Alfred women set a new AU record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR), senior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) swam to a fifth-place finish in 1:40.53, which broke the previous record of 1:41.12, set in 2002.

The four-day UNYSCSA meet began Wednesday, Feb. 20, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 23, at Ithaca College. Preliminary heats were held today in the men’s and women’s 200-yard free relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, and 400-yard medley. Finals in men’s 1-meter diving are also scheduled for this evening.

Watson, senior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and NY/Starpoint) also set new individual AU school marks Thursday. Watson swam the third-fastest time on the preliminaries of the women’s 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 58.74 broke the record of 1:00.10 she set earlier this year. Watson also qualified for tonight’s finals in the 200-yard freestyle, placing 22nd in preliminaries in 2:00.33.

Matich finished 19th in the women’s 400 IM preliminaries. Her time of 4:54.00 broke her own school mark of 4:55.52, set during last season’s UNYSCSA meet.

Toth set a new school record in the men’s 400 IM, finishing second in the Thursday preliminaries in a time of 4:10.00, which just edged the previous school mark of 4:10.31, set in 2006 by Page Beecher.

The top 24 finishers in each event advance to three rounds of evening finals and secure points for their teams. The top eight in preliminaries compete in the championship “A” finals; places ninth through 16th compete in the “B” consolation finals; and places 17th to 24th compete in the “C” consolation finals. Several other AU swimmers advanced to tonight’s finals.

Sophomore David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), junior Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) and senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) were 10th (1:43.42), 14th (1:44.85) and 21st (1:45.81), respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle; senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was 16th in the men’s 100-yard butterfly (53.30 seconds); and freshman Cian Richardson (Woodacre, CA/Sir Francis Drake) was 24th in the 40 IM (4:47.42).
