Freshman Watson leads record-breaking second day for AU at UNYSCSA championships
ITHACA, NY – Two more Alfred University women’s swimming records were broken – both by freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) – at the Upper New York Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championship meet at Ithaca College Thursday evening.
In the women’s 100-yard butterfly, Watson placed third and broke her own school record. Her time of 58.40 seconds in Thursday night’s finals and broke the school mark of 58.74 she had set earlier in the day during preliminaries. She also set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 18th place in 1:58.10 to break the previous school record of 1:58.84 set by Morgan Burrows at the 2002 UNYSCSA championships.
After two days at the four-day championship, which continue Friday and conclude Saturday, the Alfred women’s team is in 11th place of 15 teams competing, with 219 points. The Saxon men are in seventh place out of 14 teams competing, with 268 points. Stevens leads both the men’s and women’s team standings.
Watson has now set three new AU individual records this season; she set the record in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.98) last month in a meet against Hartwick, a mark she’ll have a chance to break when she swims that event Friday.
Watson has been part of two relay teams that have also set new school records during this UNYSCSA meet. During Thursday’s preliminaries, sophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), Watson, senior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) set a new mark in the 200 free relay (1:40.53); the quartet went on to place seventh in the event Thursday evening in 1:40.95. On Wednesday, Behr, McRill Watson and Emma Gromelski (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) placed fifth in the 200 medley relay in a school-record time of 1:50.44.
AU senior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) took 21st in Thursday’s finals of the 400-yard individual medley (5:00.16). Earlier in the day during preliminaries, Matich finished in 4:54.00 to break the school record she set at the 2012 UNYSCSA meet.
The team of senior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), freshman Katherine Fitz (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot), Matich and freshman Lauren Brilla (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) were 12th in the 400 medley relay (4:25.84).
Sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) led the AU men on Thursday, setting a new school record of 4:10.00 on the 400 IM. He went on to place seventh in that event Thursday evening in 4:13.14.
Three Saxons scored in the finals of the men’s 200-yard free Thursday evening. Sophomore David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), junior Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) and senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) took 10th (1:43.15), 14th (1:43.72) and 24th (1:47.10), respectively. Senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was 15th in the 100-yard fly (52.51).
Two AU men’s teams scored in the finals of the 200 freestyle relay. Alfred’s “A” team of sophomore David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Toth, Coombes and Sowinski were sixth in 1:24.94, while the Saxons’ “B” team of Irwin, junior Jake Giglio (Hornell, NY/Hornell), sophomore Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH) and Chapman were 20th in 1:29.13.
In the men’s 400 medley relay, Toth, junior Terry Soto (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), Irwin and Sowkinski were 10th (3:37.71)
