AU men’s lacrosse team has experience and depth on its side
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse, with seven of 10 starters returning, looks to improve on a 2012 campaign in which the Saxons went 4-11 overall and posted a 1-6 mark in Empire 8 Conference play.
The Saxons return a host of key players on offense and defense. The 33-man roster includes 20 returnees and 13 newcomers, providing depth and experience throughout the lineup.
Five of the top six goal scorers return, including top returning scorer, junior attackmen Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude), who had 23 points on 22 goals and an assist last season, and Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West), who shared the team lead in assists with 15.
Senior defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) will lead the AU defense, a season after a team-high 35 caused turnovers to go with 48 groundballs (second on the team). He was a Second Team Empire 8 all-star last season.
The Saxons look to improve on an offense that scored just over nine goals a game. In addition to McCaig (five goals) and Carroll, other key returnees include sophomore midfielder Nicholas Wood (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua), junior midfielders Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/Kiski School) and Brendan Sullivan (Stafford, VA/Kiski (PA) School) and senior midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home).
Wood is the second-leading returning scorer from a season ago, when he notched 13 goals and dished out six assist. Sullivan and Green were tied for fourth on the team in goals, with 12, last season, and added seven and four assists, respectively. Zon had eight goals and a team-leading 67 groundballs. He was also the team’s leading faceoff man (120 of 229 on draws).
Junior midfielder Ben DeMarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) is a returning starter who had 10 points on seven points and three assists in 2012, and will look to increase his scoring production in 2013.
The defense returns four starters: in addition to Spadoni, seniors Dave Konnick (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (seven starts in 15 games) and Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) (15 starts) and junior long-stick midfielder Pat Walsh (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude). Jelen had 27 groundballs and 17 caused turnovers; Walsh had 23 groundballs and nine caused turnovers; and Konnick had eight groundballs and seven caused turnovers.
Sophomore Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) is one of three goalkeepers returning from a season ago. He saw action in all 15 games, starting 13, and made 121 saves while tallying a 11.35 goals against average and .448 save percentage Senior Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) and junior Theo Tomczak (Elba, NY/Elba) also return.
