Saxons topple SUNY IT, 20-2

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a big win over visiting SUNY IT, 20-2, Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

AU dominated statistically outshooting SUNY IT (67-10) and holding a 57-29 groundball advantage. The Saxons held a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and then exploded in the second, third, and fourth quarter with six goals each quarter.

Junior midfielder Ben Demarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown (Maris Hills)) paced the Saxons with a game-high eight goals.  Senior midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and junior attacker Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) chipped in with a hat trick apiece.  Sophomore midfielder Nicolas Wood (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) also led the team in assists (four) and netted two goals.

Sophomore Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) made two saves in net for the Saxons, while Jeffrey Melnik stopped a game-high 25 shots in goal for SUNY IT.

Alfred (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) returns to action Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m., against SUNY Brockport.
