Two more AU women’s records fall at final day of UNYSCSA championships

ITHACA, NY – Two more Alfred University women’s swimming records were broken during preliminary heats of Saturday’s final day the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNTSCSA) championship meet at Ithaca College.


Sophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) took sixth place in the preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle to advance to tonight’s championship finals. Her time of 53.20 seconds broke the previous record of 54.52 set by Morgan Burrows in 2002. The women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon), senior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) and Behr also set a new school mark. In placing 10th in preliminaries in 3:42.86, the team broke the previous record of 3:43.59 set in 2003.


The UNYSCSA championships began Wednesday, Feb. 20, and conclude today (Saturday, Feb. 23). So far at this meet, AU women have set six new individual school records – Watson in the 100-yard and 200-yard fly and 200-yard free; Behr in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle; and senior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) in the 400 individual medley – and four relays – the 200-yard medley and 200-yard, 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle.


Three AU men advanced to tonight’s finals of the 100 free; the top 24 from preliminaries advance to finals. Sophomore David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 10th in 46.88 seconds; sophomore David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) was 18th in 47.53; and junior Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) was 21st in 47.97.


The men’s 400 free relay team of Luke, sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Coombes and Sowinski qualified fourth in 3:08.16.
