AU men’s soccer team announces 2012 season awards
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s soccer team team held its banquet for the 2012 season recently and handed out several team awards.
Senior Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) earned three team honors – Player of the Year, William Wallace Award and Ideal Teammate – for the Saxons. Gai, a two-time NSCAA All-Academic honoree and an Empire 8 all-star in 2011, was a four-year starting midfielder for the Saxons and a team captain in 2011 and 2012. He had 12 points on four goals and a team-leading four assists last season.
Senior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and freshman defender Brian O’Hanlon (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) were named Offensive MVP and Defensive MVP, respectively.
Mannino, a four-time Empire 8 all-star, led the team in points (24) and scored a team-best 11 goals (two game-winners) to go with two assists. Mannino leaves Alfred with 34 career goals, second most on the school’s all-time list behind career leader Bobby Linaberry’s 35.
O’Hanlon played in 17 games for the Saxons, starting 12 at defense his freshman season. He also was named the team’s Rookie of the Year.
Freshman defender Kevin Powers (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was named Most Improve Player. He played in 12 games, making 10 starts.
