AU English equestrian team ends regular season as regional champs

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University English equestrian team won the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2, Region I championship after a solid showing at a pair of weekend shows held at the AU Equestrian Center.

 

Alfred placed first in a show held Saturday, Feb. 23, and took fifth in a show held on Sunday, Feb. 24. The Saxons wrapped up the season as Regional High Point Team, finishing eight points ahead of Ithaca in the region’s final team standings. As regional champion, AU advances to the April 6 Zone 2 championships.

 

Event winners for Alfred in the Saturday show were: freshman Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary’s) in novice equitation on the flat and novice equitation over fences; senior Sarah Schron (Whitehall, OH) in novice equitation on the flat; junior Stephanie Mistark (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) in walk-trot; freshman Cassandra McCarn (Gouverneur, NY/Gouverneur) in beginner walk-trot; freshman Brittany Green (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) in novice equitation over fences; sophomore Olivia Costich (Penfield, NY/Harley School) in open equitation over fences; and junior Anne Bailey (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) in advanced walk-trot-canter.

 

Other top riders included: sophomore Dijon Brooks (Hartford, CT/Metropolitan Learning Center Magnet School), second in advanced walk-trot-canter; senior Lauren Carli (East Bethany, NY/Alexander), second in walk-trot; freshman Matt Chabot (Utica, NY/Notre Dame), second in novice equitation over fences; sophomore Casey Duncan (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft), second in intermediate equitation on the flat; senior Amelia Keyes (Webster, NY/Penfield), second in open equitation over fences; sophomore Atsede Scarseth (Berkshire, NY/Ithaca), second in advanced walk-trot-canter; and freshman Nicole Zanetti (Sayville, NY/Sayville), second in novice equitation over fences.

 

In Sunday’s show, the following AU riders won first-place blue ribbons: Brooks in advanced walk-trot-canter; Duncan in intermediate equitation on the flat; junior Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) in advanced walk-trot-canter; and freshman Sarah Jackson (East Syracuse, NY/Manlius-Pebble Hill) in beginner walk-trot canter.

 

Other top AU riders Sunday were: Chabot and Green, both second in novice equitation over fences; Keyes, second in open equitation over fences; Mistark, second in walk-trot-canter; freshman Cheyenne Seymour (Elmira, NY/Thomas A. Edison), second in advanced walk-trot-canter; and Zimicki, second in intermediate equitation over fences.

 

The AU English team hosts the IHSA Zone 2, Region I championship show Saturday, March 9, at the AU Equestrian Center.
