AU softball team splits pair on first day of Spring Break trip
TUSCON, AZ – The Alfred University softball team split a pair of games Monday on the first day of its six-day Spring Break trip in Tuscon, AZ. The Saxons opened with a 4-3 loss to Baldwin Wallace before rebounding to defeat Edgewood. Both games were decided on walk-off runs scored in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the win over Edgewood, the score was tied at 3-3 when freshman catcher Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) hit a triple leading off the bottom of the seventh. After a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, junior Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) hit a pinch-hit single to drive in the winning run.
Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) got the pitching win with four innings of scoreless relief, scattering seven hits while striking out four. Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, NY/Towanda) started and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking six.
Passuite finished with two hits in three at-bats with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior outfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) hit an RBI double, while junior outfielder Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) and freshman third baseman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) each had a hit and scored a run.
In the opener, Baldwin Wallace scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. Alfred led 2-0 with single runs in the second and third before Baldwin Wallace knotted the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. After AU regained the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, Baldwin Wallace tied things up again with a run in the bottom of the frame.
Senior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) went 2-for-3 with a run scored; junior Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) (triple) and freshman catcher Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) each scored a run; and Guszick hit an RBI single.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton (MA) Dunstable Regional) started for AU and allowed three earned runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Freshman Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) took the pitching loss for the Saxons, allowing a run on one hit over 1 1/3 innings of relief.
AU plays Southwestern at 9 a.m. Tuesday, then takes on Dickinson at 11 a.m.
