AU softball team drops two in Arizona
TUSCON, AZ – The Alfred University softball team lost two games Tuesday during Spring Break games played in Tuscon, AZ. Alfred dropped an 8-0 five-inning decision to Southwestern College, then fell to Dickinson, 7-6 in eight innings in the afternoon.
The Saxons fell to 1-3 on their season-opening 12-game trip to Arizona, which concludes Saturday.
Against Dickinson, Alfred trailed 6-4 before scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, then holding Dickinson in the bottom of the frame to send the game into extra innings. AU put runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the eighth but couldn’t score, then Dickinson plated an unearned run with no one out in the bottom of the frame to get the win.
Freshman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs to lead AU. Senior Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) was 2-for-5, while freshman Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) (RBI) and sophomore Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) (run scored) each had two hits.
Sophomore Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton (MA) Dunstable Regional) started in the pitcher’s circle for Alfred and allowed six earned runs on eight hits over six innings. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) took the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits in one-plus innings of relief.
In the loss to Southwestern, Hampton and junior Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) each went 1-for-2 for the Saxons. Freshman Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) took the pitching loss for the Saxons, allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
AU plays Texas Lutheran at 9 a.m. Wednesday (March 13), then takes on Sul Ross (TX) State at 11 a.m.
