AU softball team drops Chatham, falls to Concordia in Arizona
TUSCON, AZ — The Alfred University softball team shut out Chatham (PA) University, 16-0 in five innings, Friday on the Saxons’ Spring Break trip in Tuscon, AZ.
AU followed with a 5-0 loss to Concordia (TX) University. With the split of two games Friday, Alfred’s record on the 12-game season opening Spring Break trip falls to 4-6. The Saxons wrap up the Arizona trip with a pair of Saturday games.
In the win over Chatham, sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) earned her second shutout of the season, allowing one hit and striking out three.
Senior Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) and junior Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) paced a Saxons’ offense that banged out 22 hits. Mistretta was 3-for-3 with a double, five RBIs and a run scored, while Arguello was 5-for-5 with an inside-the-park homerun, a double, and three RBIs. Arguello scored five runs, which ties a school single-game record.
Freshman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and one driven in; freshman Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) was 2-for-4 with three runs; and junior Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.
Torchia was 2-for-2 and freshman Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy), sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and Passuite each went 1-for-3 in the loss to Concordia. Wickwire took the pitching loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and striking out three in seven innings.
The Saxons play Trinity (TX) at 11 a.m. and Jamestown (ND) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. AU is scheduled to host RIT in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, March 20.
