AU softball team wraps up Arizona trip

TUSCON, AZ — The Alfred University softball team lost games Saturday on the final day of the Saxons’ Spring Break trip in Tuscon, AZ.


AU lost to Trinity, 9-1 in five innings, then fell 7-6 to Jamestown College. With the two defeats, the Saxons finished the season-opening 12-game Arizona trip with a 4-8 record.


Against Trinity, freshman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) was 2-for-2 with a run scored and freshman Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) hit an RBI double. Junior Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) also hit a double and senior Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) was 2-for-2.


Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) took the pitching loss for the Saxons, allowing eight runs (three earned) on four hits over 1 1/3 innings. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) threw 3 1/3 innings of five-hit relief, allowing an unearned run.


Picini was 4-for-4 with a three-run homerun and four RBIs in the loss to Jamestown. Torchia was 2-for-4 with two runs; Wickwire and Mistretta were each 2-for-3; and Scheer hit an RBI double.


Sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) while striking out two in 4 2/3 innings. Muller went 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out four.


The Saxons play next on Wednesday, March 20, when they host RIT in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
