AU men’s lacrosse team whips Medaille, remains unbeaten
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s lacrosse broke open a close game with 11 third-period goals en route to a 22-8 victory over visiting Medaille College Tuesday afternoon at Merrill Field.
The game was tied 3-3 after one quarter and Alfred led 9-6 at the half. After Medaille scored 4:45 into the third, AU reeled off six unanswered to take a 16-7 lead with 5:31 left in the frame. After a Medaille goal a minute later made it 16-8, the Saxons closed the scoring with six unanswered goals (four to close out the third and two in the fourth).
With the win, Alfred improves to 6-0 on the season, while Medaille falls to 2-3.
Junior attacker Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) led the Saxons with seven goals, while junior long-stick midfielder Pat Walsh (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) added a goal, two assists and a game-high 10 groundballs.
Senior Junior midfielder Ben Demarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) had four goals and two assists and midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had three goals and a pair of assists for the Saxons, who outshot the visitors, 63-34, while holding a 47-22 advantage in groundballs and forcing 24 Medaille turnovers.
Sophomore Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) started in goal for Alfred and made three saves while allowing eight goals in three quarters. Senior Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) and junior Theo Tomczak (Elba, NY/Elba) combined to make three saves while blanking Medaille in the fourth.
Brock Levick had three goals to lead Medaille. Sean Kettles went the distance in goal and made 15 saves.
AU is in action next on Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m., when the Saxons open Empire 8 Conference play against visiting Stevens.
