AU English equestrian team readies for Zone 2 championships
GREENVALE, NY -- The Alfred University English equestrian team is sending eight riders to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone 2 hunt seat championships on Sunday, April 7.
AU, as IHSA Zone 2, Region 1 champions, qualified to send a seven-member point team. Five riders, four from the point team, also qualified to compete as individuals at the Zone 2 show, which is being held at the Long Island University-C.W. Post College facility in Greenvale, NY.
The following riders make up Alfred’s point team: senior Amelia Keyes (Webster, NY/Penfield), open equitation on the flat and over fences; junior Amalia Maslen (Chardon, OH/Andrews Osborne), intermediate equitation over fences; sophomore Casey Duncan (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft), intermediate equitation on the flat; freshman Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary’s), novice equitation on the flat; freshman Brittany Green (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley), novice equitation over fences; freshman Haley Argersinger (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore), walk-trot-canter; and junior Nicole Mekker (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), walk-trot.
Keyes (intermediate equitation over fences), Maslen (intermediate equitation on the flat), Duncan (novice equitation on the flat), and Zimicki (novice equitation over fences) will also compete as individuals, as will AU senior Sarah Schron (Whitehall, OH/ECofT), in walk-trot-canter.
Teams and individuals must finish in the top two at the Zone championships to qualify to compete at the IHSA National Championships May 2-5 in Harrisburg, PA. Two members of the AU Western equestrian team – junior Derek Partridge (Groveland, NY/Geneseo) and sophomore Lexi Buckheit (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) – have already qualified for the IHSA Western Nationals.
