Women’s Lacrosse downs Houghton, 15-8

HOUGHTON, NY –The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team beat Houghton College, 15-8, on the road Wednesday evening. This win improves the Lady Saxons to 3-1 overall.

Houghton scored first at the 27-minute mark to give them a 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) evened the count at 1-1 for Alfred at the 20-minute mark of the first half. The two teams exchanged goals, but junior midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) and sophomore attacker Kaitlyn Button (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) each netted a pair of goals to give AU the 6-5 lead at halftime. The Lady Saxons opened the second half with seven unanswered goals to lift them above the Highlanders and secure the win as time expired.

White and Button matched each other in scoring with a game-high five goals apiece. Garcia finished with a hat-trick and game-high six ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Haley Nannig (North Kingston, RI/North Kingston) and freshman defender Jackie O’Sullivan (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) (goal, assist) scooped up five and four ground balls as well.  

Sophomore Taylor Tarajos (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) went the distance in net and made nine saves for AU.

Alfred next faces Hartwick College on Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m.
