Bike ride to Reunion becoming a tradition! Join us as we build it!

After pioneering rides to the Reunion by Elliott Lasky and Russ Fahey in 1998, five bikers arrived on a bike ride from Colmar, PA (near Philadelphia) to the 50th reunion of the class of 1958 in 2008 (four of them members of the class of '58). Since then there have been bike rides from the Newburgh, NY area (2010), Lake Placid (2011), and Mars, PA (2012 - Bikers from Mars!).

This year the ride will begin in Albany. The theme for the ride is “Alums Along the Mohawk.” After biking across the Poconos, the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and the Alleghenies, the trip finally offers a relatively flat path (though beware that the final day will be a minor challenge: Alfred's elevation is not that much lower than Lake Placid).

While past bike trips have involved at most five bikers, this year the trip will move to a new plateau.  At the moment 15 bikers have signed up for part, or the entire trip.  Wow! We'd love more.

This year's AU alumni bikers include:

  • Elliott Lasky '58 (our founder)
  • Russ Fahey '58 (our founder)
  • Roger Eiss '58
  • Andy Seaman '58
  • Barney Hart '58
  • Dave Wilcox '58
  • Dave Perry '61
  • Larry Ploetz '68
  • Mary Bouchard '73
  • Dave Conrad '76
  • Dave Holleb '77
  • Jim Randall '77
  • Donna Bruschi '84

More alumni bikers are welcome.

But biking isn’t the whole story. In past years, bike trip bikers have enjoyed meeting with AU alums along the way. The non-bikers have contacted us and invited us to join them at either their favorite restaurant or at a restaurant on our route (in a few instances driving 30 or 40 miles to be with us).  In many cases they did not know any of the bikers; in every case we had a wonderful meal sharing memories of Alfred University. Let us know if you'd like to do this. (We have already begun to line up meals with alumni along the way.)

The schedule for the 2013 bike trip is:

  • Friday May 31: Arrival and get acquainted dinner (Albany)
  • Saturday June 1: See the sights in Albany, test bikes, kick-off dinner
  • Sunday June 2: Albany to Amsterdam
  • Monday June 3: Amsterdam to Utica
  • Tuesday June 4: Utica to Weedsport
  • Wednesday June 5: Weedsport to Penn Yan
  • Thursday June 6: Penn Yan to Hornell (traditional end-of-ride dinner, joined by alums from the Hornell area, retired AU profs, and others)
  • Friday June 7: Victory Ride to the King Alfred Statue.
