Hartwick tops Women’s Lacrosse, 18-12
ALFRED, NY –The Alfred University women’s lacrosse lost an 18-12 decision to visiting Hartwick College, Saturday afternoon. This win puts Hartwick at 4-5 (1-1 Empire 8) and drops Alfred to 3-2 (0-2 Empire 8).
Hartwick opened the game on a 3-0 run inside of 27 minutes. With the help of two goals from sophomore attacker Kaitlyn Button (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia), the Lady Saxons scored five unanswered goals to give them a 5-3 lead around the 20-minute mark. Back-and-forth scoring resulted in an 11-8 lead for Hartwick at intermission. Hartwick went on a five goal streak at the 23-minute mark to give them the 7-4 scoring advantage during the second half.
For the match, Button and senior midfielder Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) paced Alfred with four goals each. Junior midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) netted three goals for a hat-trick.
Garcia also led the team in ground balls (five) and caused turnovers (three). Junior defender Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), sophomore midfielder Haley Nannig (North Kingston, RI/North Kingston), and Button combined for nine of Alfred’s 25 ground balls, scooping up three each. Freshman defender Kerry Mack (Weedsport, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) caused three turnovers as well.
Sophomore Taylor Tarajos (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) made a game-high 10 saves throughout the course of the entire match for AU.
The Lady Saxons return to action Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. against Stevens Tech.
