AU softball team to honor veterans during Sunday doubleheader
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University softball team will honor veterans at its Sunday, April 14, doubleheader against visiting Penn College.
Sunday is the opening date for Alfred’s new on-campus softball field. The Saxons are honoring service men and women as part of the team’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day. Prior to the first pitch of the 1 p.m. twinbill, the team will recognize members of the student body, faculty and staff, and members of the Alfred community who have served our country in the military.
The team will be sporting special camouflage uniform shirts for the occasion and will also have in attendance current AU students who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The event is part of the Alfred University Athletics Department service initiative, in which Saxon varsity sports teams organize and participate in community service events throughout the academic year.
Among the projects completed this year are reading programs at area elementary schools, and volunteer officiating at a youth tournament at Genesee Valley Central School, by the men’s and women’s basketball teams; a three-on-three soccer tournament aimed at raising funds and increasing awareness of AIDS prevention in Africa, by the men’s soccer team; multiple sclerosis awareness fundraiser, men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams; and sidewalk snow removal in downtown Alfred, men’s lacrosse team.
