Men’s Lacrosse edges Elmira, 9-8
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team held off visiting Elmira College, with a 9-8 victory, Saturday afternoon in their final Empire 8 home game of the season. This win improves the Saxons to 7-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
A pair of goals in the first and second quarter from junior attacker Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) kept the Saxons with the Soaring Eagles at 4-4, until a goal from senior attacker Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) gave AU the 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
Elmira netted two goals in the opening of the third quarter giving them a 6-5 edge until junior midfielder Ben Demarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) scored three-straight unanswered goals to put AU on top (8-6) heading into the fourth.
The Soaring Eagles answered back with a pair of goals at the 11 and six minute marks of the fourth quarter. Junior midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) then netted an unassisted goal inside of three minutes to give Alfred the victory.
For the game, Alfred held a 51-24 shot advantage, and a 25-14 ground ball advantage.
Junior defender Chris Tauterouff (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) picked up a game-best nine ground balls and senior defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) caused a game-high four turnovers to anchor the Saxon defense.
Senior Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) made eight saves in 58 minutes for AU.
AU plays its last home game of the season against Elmira College on Saturday, April 13, at 4 p.m.
