Saxons open Harrington Field with sweep of Penn College
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University softball team opened Harrington Park, the University’s new on-campus field, with a doubleheader sweep of Penn College Sunday afternoon.
The Saxons (14-10) took the opener, 9-0, and completed the sweep with a 15-0 win; both games ended after five innings.
Freshman shortstop Nicole Maher (Newark, DE.Caravel Academy) hit the first homerun at the new field, a three-run blast over the fence in center, as the Saxons took a 4-0 lead after one inning. Junior outfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparowbush, NY/Port Jervis) finished the game with a three-run shot to right in the fifth that put AU up 9-0 and ended the game due to the eight-run rule.
Guszick scored two runs; senior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI; and junior outfielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) had a pair of hits and scored a run.
Freshman pitcher Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) went the distance to earn the shutout, allowing one hit, striking out four and walking none to improve to 3-3 on the season.
AU banged out 18 hits in the nightcap, sending 13 batters to the plate in the first and scoring nine runs. Maher and freshman second baseman Patricia Burdick (Lockport, NY/Lockport) each had two RBIs in the inning. Burdick finished 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two driven in.
Freshman first baseman Julie Canova (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis Academy) hit two doubles, drove in four runs and scored once; junior outfielder Danielle Mastropierro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) was 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs; junior outfielder Jackie Tomisman (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) was 2-for-2 and scored three runs; freshman catcher Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) (two runs) and Maher each went 2-for-4; and freshman Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) and freshman third baseman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) (2-for-3) each scored two runs and drove in one.
Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) got the complete-game shutout win for the Saxons, allowing three hits and striking out five.
Alfred is back in action Monday, April 15, at 3 p.m. in a key Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Elmira College. Alfred is tied with St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 standings with a 6-2 league mark. Elmira is tied with Ithaca for third with a 4-2 conference record.
