Men’s lacrosse downed by Nazareth, 12-10
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-10 decision to visiting Nazareth College Tuesday evening on Merrill Field, concluding a game that began on Wednesday but was stopped at halftime due to lightning.
The score was tied at 6-6 when play was stopped after two quarters last week. Junior attacker Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) and junior midfielder Brendan Sullivan (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) each netted two goals in the first half to lead the Saxons’ offense.
When play resumed Tuesday, the teams exchanged two goals each to open the third -- senior midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and freshman midfielder Nolan Jessop (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored for the Saxons -- and the game was tied 8-8 with 6:28 left in the period. Nazareth responded with three unanswered to take an 11-8 lead four minutes into the fourth. AU answered with goals by Carroll and Sullivan to pull the Saxons within a goal, at 11-10, with 8:21 left, but AU could not net the equalizer, as the Golden Flyers closed out the scoring with 10 seconds remaining in regulartion.
Senior defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) picked up nine ground balls and caused five turnovers for the Saxons. Senior Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) went the distance in net, making a game-high 18 saves.
Alfred (7-4, 1-4 Empire 8) returns to action on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m, at St. John Fisher.
