AU softball team swept at Fisher
PITTSFORD, NY – The Alfred University softball team wrapped up its Empire 8 Conference slate with a doubleheader at St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon and was swept by the host Cardinals, 1-0 and 6-1. With the two losses, Alfred falls to 17-13 overall and finishes with a league mark of 7-5.
In the opener, Alfred sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Hasbersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) got the complete-game loss despite allowing a run on only five hits while striking out 10 and walking none. Fisher’s Sarah Stefanon allowed only two Saxon hits and whiffed 12 to earn the shutout.
Junior outfielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) and freshman catcher Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) each had base hits for Alfred (17-12, 7-4 Empire 8).
In the second game, Fisher took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings, then added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead before AU broke through with a run in the top of the seventh.
O’Sullivan started for Alfred and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking three. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) finished up, allowing an unearned run on one hit. Stefanon got the win for Fisher, allowing an earned run on five hits and striking out seven.
Senior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) hit a solo homerun to account for Alfred’s only run. Picini had two hits, including a double, and sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and freshman Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) each hit a single.
Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, April 23, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Oneonta State.
