AU softball team makes Empire 8 championship field
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University softball team earned a berth in the Empire 8 Championships and will be seeded fourth in the four-team tournament May 3-5 at Utica College.
Alfred earned the fourth seed in the tournament after Elmira split a doubleheader at Ithaca. Alfred (17-13 overall) finished tied with Ithaca for fourth place in the Empire 8 standings with 7-5 league records. Alfred earned the fourth and final bid to the tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker: Alfred split with top-seeded Utica, while Ithaca was swept by the Pioneers.
Utica, with a 9-3 league record, is the top seed. Elmira and St. John Fisher tied for second with 8-4 conference records, but Elmira, which split with Fisher, won the tiebreaker due to its sweep of Utica.
Alfred will take on Utica in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, while Elmira will play Fisher. The winner of the tournament gets the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament.
Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, April 23, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Oneonta State.
