Saxons sweep doubleheader from Oneonta
4/23/13

ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University softball team rallied for three runs in their last at-bat to take a 5-4 decision from host SUNY Oneonta to complete a sweep of the non-league doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. Combined with a 12-8 victory earlier, Alfred improved to 19-13 on the season.

In the second game, Alfred trailed 4-2 in the top of the seventh when the Saxons mounted their winning rally. Freshman shortstop Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) hit an RBI single to draw the Saxons to within a run, and with two outs, outfielder Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) belted a two-run double to plate the tying and winning runs.

Sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) got the first two outs in the bottom of the seventh before sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) got the final two outs for her third save. O’Sullivan allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out four to improve to 10-3 on the year.

Scheer was 3-for-4 and sophomore first baseman Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) hit a solo homerun and scored twice. Freshman third baseman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) had a hit and scored two runs.

In the opener, a slugfest that saw the score tied at 8-8 after five innings, AU scored two runs in each of the final two innings and Muller clamped down on the Dragons, tossing 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Freshman Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) was 4-for-4 and scored three runs to pace the Saxon offense. Torchia was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in; Wickwire had two hits, scored twice and drove in three runs; and freshman second baseman Patricia Burdick (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had two hits, including a double, and scored a run.

Wickwire started and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in three innings. Freshman Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) relieved and went 1 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits before Muller took over with one out in the fifth.

Alfred plays next on Wednesday, April 24, in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Fredonia.
