Eight Saxons earn Empire 8 outdoor track and field all-conference honors

ALFRED, NY — The Empire 8 announced its outdoor track and field all-conference teams this week and eight members of the Alfred University men’s and women’s teams earned all-league honors.

Four individual members of the Alfred men’s team received all-conference recognition, as did one men’s relay team, while one member of the AU women’s team was honored. All-conference awards were based on results from last weekend’s Empire 8 Championships, held at Nazareth College. Event winners earned First Team honors, while runners-up garnered Second Team recognition.

For the Saxon men, senior Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) and freshman Joe Duermeyer (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) were named First Team all-stars. Lopez won the long jump (6.69 meters) and Duermeyer took first in the shot put (12.81 meters).

Sophomore Greg Pomarico (Liberty, PA/Liberty) and junior Jason Osborne (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) received Second Team recognition: Pomarico in the javelin (51.27 meters) and Osborne in the shot put (12.76 meters).

AU’s 4X400 relay team of Lopez, senior Randy Brito (New York, NY/Cardinal Hayes), junior Eddie Potter (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and sophomore Nolan Rummel (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) earned First Team honors with a winning time of 3:26.75.

AU sophomore Miasia Hillman (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) was the lone Saxon woman to earn all-conference recognition. She took First Team honors in the 100-meter dash (12.74 seconds).

The AU men and women are in action next on Saturday, April 27, at the St. John Fisher College Invitational.
