Graduating art students host shows
Visitors from throughout Western New York and beyond are invited to the Alfred University (AU) campus Saturday, May 11 for the opening of the annual Senior Shows, an exhibition of the work of the 101 graduating candidates for the bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University.
The shows will be on display from 4-7 p.m. throughout School of Art and Design facilities in Binns-Merrill Hall, Harder Hall, and Davis Gym, all on campus.
The AU Senior Shows, a requirement for graduation from the School of Art and Design, have become a major attraction for art lovers, who are drawn to Alfred for the opportunity to see work by some of the country’s most promising young artists. The event promises to be an exciting multi-disciplinary display of talent.
Interdisciplinary Art Senior Shows are also scheduled Saturday, from 3-7 p.m. in the Brick Studios, on campus. The exhibition includes paintings exploring invented mythologies, mixed-media figurative drawings, alternative process and digital photography, and found-object work. The exhibit will continue Sunday through Tuesday, May 14 from noon-4 p.m. each day.
Master of fine arts degree candidates in ceramic art, sculpture/dimensional students, and integrated electronic arts will have their work featured in a series of exhibitions in the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery beginning with an opening Friday, May 10 from 7-9 p.m. The Gallery will also be open Sunday from 1-3 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday, May 13 and 14, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Cohen Gallery, 55 N. Main St., Alfred, in a renovated Victorian house that provides gallery space for exhibiting the work of AU alumni, faculty, and visiting artists, will have extended hours through Saturday, May 18, Commencement Day. The gallery will be open Friday, May 10 from 3-6 p.m. and Saturday, May 11 from 2-5 p.m.; then Friday, May 17 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, May 18, from noon-3 p.m.
The Cohen Gallery will also be open for its regular hours: Tuesday 9 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, noon-7 p.m., and Thursday, 2-7 p.m.
