Rochester sweeps AU softball team

ROCHESTER, NY– Host Rochester swept a doubleheader from theAlfredUniversitysoftball team Friday afternoon. The Yellowjackets took the first game, 4-3, then shut out the Saxons, 4-0, in the nightcap.


In the first game, Alfred (19-15) rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to tie it at 3-3, butRochestergot a walk-off solo homerun with two outs in the bottom of the frame.


Freshman Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Her two-run single tied the contest for AU in the seventh. Freshmen Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay,CA/Lindsay) and Mackenzie Miller (Newport,OR/Newport) each scored a run and freshman Jasmine Picini (Alexandra,VA/WestPotomac) had an RBI single.


Freshman Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park,IL/Elmwood) took the pitching loss for AU, allowing four runs on 11 hits and striking out three in 6 2/3 innings.


In the second game, AU had six base hits, including Pincini’s double. Junior Rachel Guszick (Sparrowburh,NY/Port Jervis), junior Danielle Mastropierro (Randolph,NJ/Randolph), senior Maressa Mistretta (Shirley,NY/Longwood) and junior Samijo Scheer (Corning,,NY/Corning East) also had base hits for the Saxons.


Sophomore Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) took the pitching loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five in five innings. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) allowed one hit in an inning of scoreless relief.


Alfred wraps up its regular season on Wednesday at3 p.m.with a doubleheader at Keuka. The Saxons then play in the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament atUticaMay 3-5. The Saxons are seeded fourth in the four-team tournament, the winner of which earns a berth in the NCAA Division III championships.
