AU softball team ends regular season with pair of wins at Keuka
KEUKA PARK, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept a doubleheader at Keuka College Wednesday afternoon. The Saxons took the first game, 3-1, then thumped the Storm, 12-3 in six innings, to wrap up their regular season.
Alfred will go into this weekend’s Empire 8 Conference Championship tournament with a 23-15 record, riding a six-game winning streak.
In Wednesday’s opener, AU led 3-0 after scoring a run in the first and two more in the fifth, before allowing Keuka to score a single run in the bottom of the fifth. AU sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) went 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) tossed 1 1/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn the save.
AU freshman catcher Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) went 2-for-4, driving in the Saxons’ first run with a first-inning double. Freshman shortstop Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/caravel Academy) hit a two-run single in the sixth. Freshman outfielder Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and freshman third baseman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) had two hits in three at-bats and scored a run.
In the second game, Alfred scored four in the third and led 4-1 after five innings before exploding for eight in the top of the sixth to go up 12-1. Keuka plated two in the bottom of the frame, but the game ended due to the eight-run rule.
Jauregui was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs, while freshman second baseman Patricia Burdick (Lockport, NY/Lockport) (3-for-4, one run) and Torchia (double, two runs) each drove in three runs. Freshman catcher Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) was 4-for-5 with a run scored and Maher was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in.
Freshman pitcher Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) started and threw five innings of four-hit ball, allowing two earned runs and striking out three to get the win. Muller finished up, allowing one run on two hits in one inning of relief.
The Saxons take the field next at the Empire 8 Conference Championship tournament at Utica College Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 3-5. Alfred, the fourth seed in the four-team double-elimination tournament, takes on top-seeded Utica at noon Friday. The winner of the tournament earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
