Two AU riders compete at nationals; Keyes and Duncan each place eighth
HARRISBURG, PA — Two members of the Alfred University English equestrian team competed on Thursday’s opening day of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships in Harrisburg.
Senior Amelia Keyes (Webster, NY/Penfield) and sophomore Casey Duncan (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) competed Thursday in the Hunt Seat division. Keyes took eighth place in intermediate equitation over fences and Duncan placed eighth in novice equitation on the flat.
Keyes and Duncan competed at nationals after placing second in their respective classes at the IHSA Zone 2 championship show April 7 at Long Island University-C.W. Post College. Both placed second and were named Reserve Champions at the IHSA Zone 2, Region I championships, held March 9 at the Alfred University Equestrian Center.
Their performance wraps up a historical season for the AU English Team. The Saxons won the program’s first-ever Regional championship this season, and just missed sending a team to nationals. The top two teams at the Zone championships qualify for nationals and Alfred placed third, a mere two points behind second-place Skidmore.
Prospects the team making nationals next season are solid, as five of the six Saxons who rode in the team competition at the Hunt Seat Zone 2 show are underclassmen. In addition to Duncan, junior Amalia Maslen (Chardon, OH/Andrews Osborne), freshmen Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary’s), Brittany Green (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) and Haley Argersinger (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore), along with junior Nicole Mekker (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) are set to return next fall.
Two members of the AU Western team are also competing at the IHSA National Championships, which run through Sunday, May 5. Junior Derek Partridge (Groveland, NY/Geneseo) and sophomore Lexi Buckheit (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) are competing in open reining.
