Three Saxons earn Empire 8 softball all-conference recognition

ALFRED, NY — Three members of the Alfred University softball team have been named Empire 8 Conference all-stars.

The Empire 8 announced its all-conference teams today and Alfred had one player named to the First Team, while two were given honorable mention. All-conference awards are based on a vote by coaches using statistics from conference games only.

Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) was named to the First Team as a utility player, while freshman catcher Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) and sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Barnstable (MA) Regional) were given honorable mention.

Wickwire appeared in 11 of 12 conference games and batted .316 with a pair of runs, six hits (two doubles, one homerun) and five RBIs. She had a 1-1 pitching record with a 3.06 ERA and 11 strikeouts. She also turned in a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage as a first baseman and pitcher.

Picini hits .333 in 12 conference games, with four runs scored, 12 hits (two doubles) and three runs batted in.

O’Sullivan started eight conference games, going 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and a team-leading 46 strikeouts.

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on conference-sponsored teams, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibit outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Senior utility player Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) is Alfred’s honoree from the softball team.
