Alfred University’s Spadoni named Empire 8 men’s lacrosse all-star
ALFRED, NY — Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Shroeder), a senior defender on the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team, has been named an Empire 8 Conference all-star.
The Empire 8 announced its all-conference teams today and Spadoni was named to the First Team. All-conference awards are based on a vote by Empire 8 coaches using statistics from conference games only.
Spadoni is the first AU men’s lacrosse player to earn First Team all-conference honors since former attackman David Vail in 2004. He was a Second Team selection as a junior in 2012. In seven Empire 8 games this year, Spadoni had 32 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers; in 13 games overall, he has 51 groundballs and 40 caused turnovers.
A four-year starter on defense for the Saxons, Spadoni is the school’s career leader in caused turnovers, with 138. Caused turnovers became an official statistic in 2007.
Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on conference-sponsored teams, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibit outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Senior defender Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) is Alfred’s honoree from the men’s lacrosse team.
The Saxons (7-6) are in action this evening (May 8) at 7 p.m. at Lebanon Valley in the first round of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship tournament. AU is the fifth seed in the seven-team tournament; Lebanon Valley is seeded fourth.
