Saxons fall to Alvernia at ECAC South softball championship tournament
READING, PA – Host Alvernia defeated the Alfred University softball team, 13-1, Saturday morning at the ECAC South championship tournament.
Alvernia (36-9), the top seed in the eight-team tournament, scored five runs in the first, six in the second and a pair in the fourth en route to claiming the eight-run rule victory. Alfred (24-18) scored its lone run the third inning when senior second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River).
Alfred moves to the double-elimination tournament’s loser’s bracket, where the Saxons will play at 2 p.m.against sixth-seeded Stevenson, which lost to second-seeded Frostburg State. Live Stats for all tournament games are available here.
AU, the tournament’s fifth seed, was held to six hits in the game. Sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) had a double; freshman outfielder Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay), junior outfielder Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis), freshman shortstop Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy), and junior outfielder Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) each hit singles.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) started and allowed 10 runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out one. Sophomore Samantha Jo Muller (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) relieved and faced one batter, allowing an earned run, before freshman Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) finished up, allowing two earned runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Alfred defeated fourth-seeded Centenary, 6-1, on Thursday during single-elimination play. The winners of Wednesday’s and Thursday’s quarterfinal games were eliminated, while the winners advanced to this weekend’s double-elimination round.
