AU softball team’s ECAC game with Stevenson delayed by rain
READING,PA– The Alfred University-Stevenson elimination game in the ECAC South championship tournament was delayed due to rain Saturday.
The game between the fifth-seeded Saxons and sixth-seeded Stevenson will resume at 8 a.m. Sunday with Stevenson leading 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth. When the game restarts, Alfred will be batting with runners on second and third with one out.
The winner of the Alfred-Stevenson game will play at 11 a.m. Sunday against the loser of the game between top-seeded and host Alvernia and second-seeded Frostburg State. The loser of the AU-Stevenson game is eliminated from the tournament. Alvernia and Frostburg will play following the conclusion of the Alfred-Stevenson contest.
In Saturday’s game against Stevenson, Alfred took 1-0 lead in the third when junior outfielder Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Stevenson went ahead with three in the fifth, with all three runs scoring with two outs.
Freshman outfielder Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) and freshman catcher Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) hit consecutive singles leading off the bottom of the sixth. Jauregui and junior Danielle Mastopierro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) (pinch running for Greenberg) were sacrificed to third and second before rains stopped the contest with freshman Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) at the plate.
Freshman pitcher Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) started for Alfred and allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings. Sophomore Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable (MA) Regional) relieved and got two outs in the sixth.
