Alfred University appoints new men’s tennis coach
ALFRED, NY – Alfred University Athletic Director Paul Vecchio has announced the appointment of Steven Sutfin as head coach of the men’s tennis team.
Sutfin replaces Chris Yartym as head coach of men’s tennis at AU. Yartym, director of the Alfred University Athletic Training Program and a clinical instructor in athletic training, had served as head coach of both the AU men’s and women’s teams for five years before leaving the position following the 2012-13 academic year.
Sutfin brings a variety of tennis playing and coaching experience to AU. As a high school and college student, he played on club and intercollegiate teams and competed in local tournaments. He previously served as a coach at Bath-Haverling Central School, Avoca Central School and the Addison Central School; as an instructor for Houghton College and St. Bonaventure University summer camps; and an instructor for the Village of Bath Summer Recreation Program.
“Steve uses tennis as a tool for growth in the young men and women he has coached,” Vecchio commented. “He has been a dynamic coach at the high school level locally and will coach our student-athletes with great pride and passion and will leave no stone unturned in making our program better.”
Sutfin’s professional experience include working as a Compeer coordinator and social club coordinator for Steuben County Community Services; a substitute teacher at Avoca and Bath central schools and several other Steuben County school districts; a business education teacher in the Bath Central School District; and as an affective educator for the Addison Central School District and Steuben-Allegany BOCES.
Sutfin earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Messiah College and master’s degrees in education and business at Alfred University.
